Three years ago, the National Literacy Trust hosted the first of their Young Readers programme at New Mersey. Over 260 local school-children from the surrounding area took part in the event: St. Ambrose Catholic Primary School, Springwood Health Primary and Garston Church of England Primary were among the schools involved.
The event evolved from the relationship between New Mersey and the National Literacy Trust, and is designed to inspire children under the age of 11 to read in their spare time, and to see reading as a fun and creative activity. This programme stems from a study that showed reading outside of the classroom instigates higher reading levels within the classroom.
New Mersey was glad to host the event, strengthening the ties we have with our local community.
